Youth Apparel Beginner Workshop - Make the Hinterland Dress with Sam Donovan
Saturdays, January 10 and 31, 2026 | 10 am - 4 pm
Be the designer of your unique style by making your own dress! Learn how to sew a Hinterland dress with Sam Donovan. This is a beginner apparel sewing class. Sam will help you pick the right size, select fabric, decide on sleeves, and show you how to sew.
Specific skills you will learn include:
- How to measure yourself
- How to read a pattern and cut out your pieces
- How to stitch your seams and finish them with a serger
- How to hem a garment
- How to sew a buttonhole and attach a button

| Skill Details: | This is a beginner sewing class for teens and tweens aged 11-19. Younger students can be considered with parental participation. Please call the store if your sewer is younger than 11. |
| Materials Included: | Includes use of one of our Bernina 400-series classroom machines. |
| Requirements: | You will need the selected patterns and supplies listed on the pattern. Additionally, bring coordinating thread, pins, scissors, rotary cutter and ruler, and other basic sewing supplies. Sewing machine required. Please let us know if you would like to use one of our classroom machines. A full supply list will be provided three weeks before class. |

| Instructor Bio: | Sam Donovan is the Director of Apparel Sewing here at Cotton Candy fabrics. A graduate of Parsons, Sam also appeared on Project Runway twice, where he was a runner-up and an All-Star. His passion for helping people learn how to sew is inherited from his grandmothers, all of whom had a role in his fashion and sewing beginnings. Nowadays, Sam can be found bouncing around the Cotton Candy Sewing Room, soy latte in hand, pins stuck in his shirt pocket, helping people learn the newest apparel pattern Cotton Candy is offering. He hopes to see you in a sewing class soon, but beware: he?ll probably try to get you to try pattern mixing. Watch our calendar for Sam?s apparel classes. |
